Ninja Pressure Cooker Recall Lawsuits

Nearly 2 million SharkNinja Foodi pressure cookers are being recalled due to defects that have to led to burn injuries. On this page, our national product liability lawyers will look at the Ninja Foodi recall and how consumers who have been injured by one of these recalled devices can file a pressure cooker lawsuit and get financial compensation.

About Pressure Cookers

Electric pressure cookers, commonly known as “Instant Pots,” have surged in popularity in recent years. These appliances use pressurized steam within a sealed pot to cook a wide range of foods quickly and efficiently. The high-pressure steam not only speeds up the cooking process but also helps retain moisture, resulting in tender and flavorful dishes.

The steam is produced by heating a liquid—such as water or broth—inside the cooker. As the liquid heats up, the airtight seal allows pressure to build inside the pot, raising both the internal temperature and pressure far above the normal boiling point. This high-pressure environment enables food to cook much faster than with conventional methods.

The SharkNinja Foodi Pressure Cooker

SharkNinja is a consumer products manufacturer known for its vacuum cleaners and home kitchen and cooking appliances. The Shark product brand was originally formed in 2007 with the launch of Shark vacuum cleaners. Two years later, in 2009, the Ninja brand was created for the company’s line of small cooking appliances.

The Ninja Foodi pressure cooker is a small electric cooking appliance that can perform multiple different cooking functions. Although the Foodi is primarily a pressure cooker, it can also be used as an air fryer, slow cooker, and steamer. The Ninja Foodi pressure cooker came in 8-quart and 6-quart sizes.

The Ninja small appliance brand has been one of the most popular and best selling brands on the market in recent years. The Ninja Foodi was one of the best selling pressure cooker models on the market.

Safety Recall of Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker

On May 1, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that SharkNinja was issuing a major recall of all its Ninja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cookers. The recall covers an estimated 1.8 million devices sold in the U.S.

This massive device recall was prompter by growing concerns about potential dangers to consumers. Like all pressure cookers, the Ninja Foodi can potentially be hazardous because it contains scalding hot liquid that is under pressure during cooking. Any breach in the seal of the lid before the pressure is released will cause the hot liquid in the pot to spray out of the device. This can obviously result is very severe burn injuries to anyone who happens to be unlucky enough to be in the vicinity.

The Ninja Foodi obviously had design features that were intended to prevent this from happening, but flaws in the design of those features, or in the manufacturing process have made them unreliable.

The SharkNinja company issued the recall because it has received hundreds of reported incidents in which consumers have suffered 2nd or 3rd degree burns from device. A growing number of product liability lawsuits have also been filed against the company for severe burn injuries caused by the device.

What Devices Are Covered By The Recall?

Not all Ninja pressure cookers are included in the recent safety recall. The model numbers in the recall include OP300, OP301, OP301A, OP302, OP302BRN, OP302HCN, OP302HAQ, OP302HW, OP302HB, OP305, OP305CO, and OP350CO. The model numbers for each Ninja device are located on a label on the side of the cooker.

The recalled Ninja pressure cookers were sold between 2019 and 2025 and they cost around $200. The pressure cookers covered by the recall were sold a major retailers like Target, Walmart, Costco, and Sam’s Club. They were also sold online through Amazon and the Ninjakitchen.com website.

The Dangers Of Pressure Cookers

The liquid contents of a pressure cooker like the Ninja Foodi are heated to about 250 degrees, or sometimes even more. This burning hot liquid is then pressurize, which makes it potentially very dangerous if anything goes wrong during the process. For that reason, all pressure cookers have design features that are intended to make them safe for use.

The main purpose of safety features in pressure cookers is to ensure the lid remains securely locked while the contents are under pressure. However, when these mechanisms are flawed, the consequences can be severe. Defective designs in safety systems have caused pressure cooker lids to malfunction, leading to scalding hot contents being forcefully ejected and injuring those nearby.

Several common safety components have been found defective in various pressure cooker models, including:

  • Lid Safety Locks: These locks are designed to prevent pressure from building inside the pot unless the lid is properly secured. In some models, faulty designs have allowed pressure to build even when the lid wasn’t fully locked, increasing the risk of explosion.
  • Pressure Valves: These valves help release built-up pressure safely. When they fail to function correctly, the cooker may remain dangerously pressurized, putting users at risk of sudden lid detachment or steam burns.
  • Gaskets: The gasket forms an airtight seal around the lid. If the gasket is defective, it can compromise the seal, allowing the lid to blast open under pressure.

What Was The Problem With the Ninja Foodi?

Based on statements made by representatives of SharkNinja regarding the recent safety recall, it seems clear that the defect with the Ninja Foodi is related to the lid locking mechanism. SharkNinja explained that the injuries were caused when some consumers “managed to open the pressure-cooking lids while the cooker was still pressurized.”

This is hardly surprising because defective lid locks are by far the most common defect alleged in pressure cooker injury lawsuits. The lid lock is a critical safety feature because it is supposed to prevent consumers from being able to open the lid of the cooker until it is depressurized. It is not exactly clear what the problem was/is with the lid safety lock on the Ninja, but this is obviously what prompted the recall.

Product Misrepresentation and False Safety Claims

SharkNinja marketed the Ninja Foodi pressure cookers as fast, modern, and most importantly, safe. The company promoted features such as “14 safety mechanisms” and stated that the lid could not be opened until the cooker had fully released its internal pressure. These safety claims were made in packaging, instruction manuals, videos, and on the company’s website.

However, real-world use has shown that these claims are not reliable. People have been seriously burned while using the product exactly as intended. In several cases, the lid opened while the contents inside were still dangerously pressurized, causing hot liquids and steam to erupt and cause severe injuries.

From a legal standpoint, these types of safety claims carry consequences. When a company tells consumers that a product is safe and built to prevent specific types of injuries, that creates a clear representation. If the product does not perform as promised and someone gets hurt, the manufacturer can be held accountable not only for the defective design but also for misleading advertising and failure to warn.

Consumers who purchased the Ninja Foodi were led to believe they were buying one of the safest pressure cookers available. That belief was based on specific promises made by the manufacturer. Those promises were not kept. The product was defective. The risk was real. And the safety messaging did not match the actual performance.

Our firm has seen this kind of pattern before. When a company prioritizes marketing over safety and continues selling a dangerous product without fixing the problem, it is not just a design failure. It is a failure of trust. Our lawyers hold manufacturers accountable for both.

Potential Settlement Value of Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker Lawsuits

The potential settlement value in a defective pressure cooker lawsuit largely depends on the type and severity of the injuries sustained by the plaintiff. Thermal burns are the most frequently reported injuries resulting from pressure cooker explosions, and the compensation amount typically reflects the degree and location of those burns.

For context, first-degree burns—often seen in auto accident claims—generally result in settlements ranging from $25,000 to $75,000. These are considered relatively minor claims.

In contrast, more severe injuries command higher payouts. Third-degree burns in auto accident cases tend to settle for amounts between $100,000 and $1,000,000. Settlements in product liability cases, like those involving defective pressure cookers, may be even higher, as they are not usually limited by the at-fault party’s insurance coverage in the same way auto cases often are.

For defective pressure cooker lawsuits specifically, average settlement estimates are approximately:

  • $125,000 to $200,000 for second-degree burns
  • $600,000 to $2,000,000 for third-degree burns

Cases involving permanent facial disfigurement or extensive scarring tend to fall on the higher end of the compensation range due to the lasting impact on quality of life and appearance.
